When Faria dies, Dantès finds a daring and dangerous way to escape. Realising that the prisoners’ bodies are thrown straight into the sea, he hides in the burial sack in the abbot’s place.
Plunged into the swirling waves, he manages to get out of the sack and swim to safety. A crew of smugglers rescues him and takes him aboard for his skills as a sailor.
Some time later, the smugglers must stop at the island of Montecristo. There, Dantès manages to remain alone and find the treasure by following the directions given to him by the abbot.
