The lion of San Marco, a symbol of majesty and power. The lion of San Marco is a winged lion symbolically representing the evangelist San Marco, patron of Venice. Also known as the winged lion or the Marcian lion, it gives an immediate, unmistakable sign of identity and power. Its Christian symbolism comes from an ancient legend.

Marco was sailing towards Alexandria in Egypt. One stormy evening, he sought shelter in one of the few fishermen’s huts in Venice, probably at Rialto. After a simple supper, he fell asleep. An angel, represented by a winged lion, appeared in his dream and proclaimed in Latin:

Pax tibi Marce Evangelista meus, hic requiescet corpus tuum»

(Peace to you, Marco, my evangelist. Here your body shall rest.)

In the morning, he told the fishermen about his dream. Then he set sail to continue towards Egypt. His mission was to convert non-believers and establish one of the oldest and most important centres of Christianity of the time.
